About Us
The BTRA Sports and Social Club was originally set up for BT Employees in Bristol and was based in a BT Building on Welsh Back, in the centre of the City. The Club provided a Bar and Function Room, as well as two Skittle alleys and various Sections including Rugby, Football, Fishing, Dance, Badminton and Cricket, among others. In the late 1990’s BT was looking at it’s various buildings in the Centre and made a decision to sell off the building that housed the Club, as well as various offices on the other floors. In order to facilitate this action, BT offered to purchase a new Clubhouse for the BTRA membership.
The premises at Stockwood Lane had become free so the Ground and old Cricket pavilion were purchased and handed over to the BTRA Committee to run for their members – at that time the Football, Rugby and Cricket Sections moved from their current Sports Grounds and started playing at Stockwood.
Since re-locating to our Stockwood site there have been many changes over the years – the original wooden Cricket Pavilion Clubhouse unfortunately caught fire some years ago and was replaced by a new brick building – which has subsequently been extended as the Club has grown – so we now have separate Changing rooms and showers for the players and officials as well as a fully kitted out kitchen along with the Bar and Lounge.
Over the years the various Sections have come to an end leaving just the Rugby and Football Sections and a few social members. Off the field, the BTRA Committee are responsible for the day to day running of the Club – including ensuring there is a fully stocked Bar through to getting the grass cut and pitches marked, hot water for showers and general upkeep of the grounds and clubhouse and paying all the various bills, allowing the Rugby and Football Committees and members to focus on playing.
On the Field at present the Rugby Section is running one Adult Team on a Saturday in the Counties IV Somerset North League. The Football Section run two teams one on a Saturday playing in the Toolstation Wester League and an U18 Team playing in the Bristol and District Floodlight League – Home games on a Tuesday.
Contrary to common misconception, you do NOT have to work or have worked for BT to become a member, and any new members are always welcome so come along and join us!!
